Sheffield, Pewter production

So interesting to walk around a factory for the first time, particularly when the processes are familiar but the materials are different.  I recently had a look around Wentworth Pewter in Sheffield, who I am collaborating with on a new range of bowls. The processes of spinning and casting are similar to ceramic processes, even some of the equipment is the same.  The atmosphere, noise and materials differ greatly.

Pewter is a soft metal, so the spinning and casting processes can occur under lower temperatures than that of many other metal processes.  The softness allows the material to be spun and shaped with ease and poured at manageable heat, akin to domestic cooking temperatures no where near the heat needed for firing ceramics.
